HEALTH CARE MESSAGE FROM AN INSIDER...Health Insurance Coverage and Health Care By: Anonymous ...having worked in the health care field for over 30 years, I can provide some insight on health care and its coverage. I have first hand experience dealing with two national health systems. I managed service in Canada for 15 years and I now manage service in the UK. Both have national health systems. In both countries, the rich go to private clinics to get care and pay for it out of their pocket or they buy private health insurance, which is VERY expensive because few people buy it. Many come here to the U. S. For health care if they are very sick with cancer or other terminal illnesses. A patient can wait 6 months or more for a CT or MRI scan in both countries. The same waiting period applies to many elective surgeries. If you get the flu in the UK, you are not allowed to go to the doctor. You must call a toll-free number, they ask you a series of questions and then depending on your answers, they will call in a prescription for Tami-flu for you. This includes H1N1 screening. It is done over the phone. If you go to the doctor, they will turn you away unless you go to a private clinic and pay out of you pocket. Currently, it is illegal in the U. S. For a doctor to prescribe medication without seeing you but this will become the norm with national health-care. I had a bad sore throat a few weeks ago that lasted a week. I had white spots on my tonsils, which usually indicates strep. I went for a throat culture and it came back negative. How would they diagnose that over the phone. They would probably have given me antibiotics when I didn't need them. The sore throat went away on it's own 2 days later.
Our health care has it problems but when the government takes it over, it will get much worse. I don't think private insurance will go away but the price will go much higher as more people and companies cancel coverage. The less people with insurance, the higher the cost will be. You and I won't be able to afford it; that's for sure. Already, doctors are panicking; wondering if they will stay afloat with the 20% medicaid cuts coming in

January. Many are holding on to their old obsolete equipment because they are afraid to purchase anything new. The medical field has been very stable over the 33 years I've worked in it but I'm guessing that will change now. Anyway, those are my thoughts based on 1st hand experience.
